Provide technical assistance for the delivery of Employee Benefit Compliance Services as part of a national resource center dedicated to the support of BB&T Insurance Services’ Employee Benefits lines-of-business (LOBs) and their external clients.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
- Provide specialized compliance analysis, advice and technical assistance to producers, account managers, management and staff on issues arising under various law affecting the Employee Benefits (EB) LOB including but not limited to: the Internal Revenue Code, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA),the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA), the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and various workers compensation laws. Analysis, advice and technical assistance will be provided through:
a. Responding to daily inquiries to the EB Compliance Help Desk;
b. Telephone conferences with producers and account managers where clients may be included;
c. On-site meetings with producers and account managers where clients may also be in attendance;
d. Internal meetings and conferences with staff;
e. Assisting other ERISA and Employee Benefits Counsel with research or other projects for ultimate delivery to producers, account managers, or clients.
Research and assist others in compliance issues and questions which may arise under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), workers compensation laws, Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) ,Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) and other state and federal non-discrimination statutes.
Provide technical assistance with ERISA Compliance products and tools for national employee benefit franchise for Insurance Services in accordance with producer and client need and emerging legislation.
a. Draft or assist in drafting complex EB legal documents for external clients as a fee based service;
b. Support consultative fee-based services for Employer Clients to assist in their unique requests for support;
c. Assist compliance staff in the preparation of Form 5500 filings, wrap plan documents and 125 Plan documents;
d. Review and assist with specialized EB plan testing such as discrimination testing.
- Support marketing efforts related to Insurance Services’ EB LOB.
a. Attend client deliveries and new business presentations as appropriate;
b. Participate in webinars through drafting of slides and supporting materials or direct presentation;
c. Participate in live seminars with internal and or external audiences as knowledge expert.
Review and/or write technical articles for outbound publications.
Monitor and analyze statutes, regulations, and litigation for changing Employee Benefit legal requirements, and initiate appropriate action or changes.
Participate as part of regulatory and compliance steering committees.
Establish relationships with Insurance Services’ operating units, commercial banking officers, external clients, trade associations, government agencies, and outside attorneys.
Required Skills and Competencies:

Juris Doctor degree
Three years of work related legal practice experience
Familiarity with the basic concepts and practices in the Employee Benefits and human resources field with a goal of obtaining in-depth knowledge and expertise.
Proven effective legal analysis and written and verbal communication skills
Above average multi-tasking skills and the ability to reassess priorities to meet deadlines
Strong problem solving and project management skills
Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office software products
Ability to travel, occasionally overnight
Licensed to practice law in a state or the District of Columbia
Prior Employee Benefit plan legal experience.
Employee Benefit plan administration experience
Prior advanced project management, operations management, or product development experience
