The Truist Legal Department is looking for an experienced litigator to join the litigation team in proactively and strategically managing a wide variety of litigation and pre-litigation disputes, as well collaborating with the business and other Legal teammates to provide advice and counseling to mitigate legal risk.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.

  1. Manage a variety of litigation matters (cases, arbitrations, pre-litigation disputes) of varying complexity for the Truist family of companies to protect the company and its brand. Includes assessing legal risk posed by matters, working to develop/execute litigation strategy, managing discovery efforts – including working with the eDiscovery team, collaborating and coordinating with other key stakeholders such as line of business clients, risk management and insurers, finance and other legal teammates.

  2. Work with and supervise outside counsel on strategy, briefing, discovery, oral argument, trials, and budget management in compliance with outside counsel guidelines.

  3. With minimal supervision, collaborate and provide cross-functional support and counseling to line of business clients and to other attorneys within the Legal Department on efforts to mitigate legal/litigation risk for the company.

  4. Keep abreast of and analyze legislation, regulations, and case law developments that affect the company and the banking industry in area of practice.

  5. May prepare and/or review litigation-related documents and other instruments, represent the company in litigation or alternative dispute resolutions (as applicable), and perform and direct legal research and analysis

  6. May develop an initial area of specialization to support line(s) of business

  7. Serve as an individual contributor but may provide ad hoc work direction and leadership to other legal staff regarding support on active cases or projects.

Required Qualifications:

  1. Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA accredited law school and licensed to practice law in good standing

  2. 5 years of post-bar experience in a law firm, government, and/or corporate settings

  3. Possess strong written and verbal communication skills

  4. Ability to prioritize matters, utilize time management skills, and move between matters fluidly

  5. Ability to handle a heavy workload, manage stress effectively and meet critical deadlines

  6. Team-oriented mentality and excellent interpersonal skills

  7. Demonstrated proficiency in basic computer applications, such as Microsoft Office software products

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Experience or related training in the financial services industry

  2. Experience in a corporate legal department, especially a financial institution, having successfully held positions of advancing responsibility

  3. An educational focus on business or finance

  4. Comfortable working in the entrepreneurial environment of a large, complex corporation

  5. Possess strong negotiation skills
