Please review the following job description:

Responsible for the evaluation of Disability risks for the purpose of determining the best product/premium solution through the review client medical records. Typically handles larger, more complex cases. Cases managed will be for all ages and face amounts. Acts as a partner with sales and producers to formulate the best solution for the proposed insured. Negotiates to secure the most competitive offer for placement of policy with the appropriate carrier. Position should be in the Hartford area, ideally working in our Windsor office a few days a week.

Works on objectives related to the overall business:

• Risk Selection: evaluates or assesses the business/individual applying for insurance by qualifying accounts; identifying, selecting and assessing risks; determining the premium, policy terms and conditions; obtaining approvals; creating/presenting the proposal to the agent/broker and successfully negotiating deals.

• Agent/Broker Relationships: Demonstrates a high level of responsiveness and focus on supporting Agents and Brokers objectives through successful negotiations. Establishes and maintains the relationship through responsive service, site visits, in person renewal meetings or improved knowledge of their customers businesses.

• Portfolio Management: Handles a book of business by analyzing the portfolio, identifying areas of opportunity for improved growth, profit and diversification, and executing marketing plans to increase market share with preferred brokers.

• Documenting the Deal: Documents files in a way that reflects a shown thought process and decision-making through comprehensive account reviews, sign-offs and referrals.

• Continuous Improvement: Actively participates in continuous improvement by fully engaging in daily huddles, generating suggestions, following appropriate procedures and work principles, participating in problem solving activities, and using continuous improvement tools to support the work of the team.

Required Skills:

• Appraises and underwrites applications for morbidity and mortality risk based on financial and medical information obtained

• Ability to review medical records and make an assessment on the impact of findings in how it relates to job function or mortality

• Determining risk classification according to medical, financial, occupational and avocation hazards;

• Determining product eligibility based on product guidelines;

• Ordering and reviewing underwriting requirements, as needed;

• Determining standard/substandard risks and eligibility;

• Complying with IMSA and government regulations regarding replacements, anti-discrimination laws, confidentiality laws, HIV laws and MIB requirements;

• Reviewing files for other underwriters, providing advice on problem cases and co-signatures on ratings and declines.

• Strong Computer and Phone skills, including advanced knowledge of Microsoft products

• Motivated self-starter, with the ability to work independently with minimal oversight, and ability to prioritize work

• Strong interpersonal skills, and analytical skills leading to good decision making and decision making framework.

Performs other functions, which includes:

• Working on special projects;

• Assisting in training of underwriting assistant;

• Participating on committees, teams and task forces;

• Providing product information to other key stakeholders; and

• Keeping up-to-date with company and industry changes.
